Ideas for Thick Hair

Hello,
I have a problem, I have really thick hair and I always have them long like in the picture. I tried a few times with short hair but with gel or hairspray or wax, it doesn't stay more than 30 minutes. I like Zac Efron's haircuts and I like to do the same but it doesn't stay. Please help me!
